School Board approves contracts to build three new schools

Three construction contracts were approved today for three new elementary schools in North Las Vegas, southwestern Las Vegas and western Henderson despite skepticism about whether they were needed because of the slowdown in growth.

Residents from West Las Vegas also argued that a new school building for West Prep Academy near Lake Mead and Martin Luther King boulevard was a more pressing concern. The school has 28 portables.

The Clark County School Board approved the contracts totaling about $60 million in a 5-1 vote with Board members Linda Young in opposition and Larry Mason absent.

Board member Chris Garvey, who represents North Las Vegas, said she wanted to be “transparent” and explained she voted for the projects to help stimulate the economy.
