Passenger train makes first trip on route since 1938

VIRGINIA CITY -- Dozens of spectators lined the tracks of the Virginia & Truckee Railroad as a 140-passenger train made the 17-mile trip between Carson City and Virginia City for the first time in more than 70 years.

Gov. Jim Gibbons and Rep. Dean Heller, R-Nev., were among the dignitaries who made a special VIP trip Friday night on the historic train local officials hope will bolster tourism.

Saturday and today's 90-minute trips sold out.

Heller said it brought back memories of stories his mother used to tell about going to school in Carson City.

Miners used the track in the 1800s to carry silver ore to mills near Carson City.

The route was suspended in 1938.
