Information wants to be free, reporters want to be paid, Part 24

Joining a growing chorus of journalists and publishers, the editor of the Financial Times, that peach-covered, London-based business newspaper, says within a year almost all news organizations will be charging for online content.

According to the Guardian, Lionel Barber addressed the Media Standards Trust event at the British Academy on Wednesday and said, “How these online payment models work and how much revenue they can generate is still up in the air, but I confidently predict that within the next 12 months, almost all news organizations will be charging for content."

The New York Times recently said it was exploring a subscription base for online, possibly charging $5 a month or $2.50 for print subscribers. Prior to that Rupert Murdoch said he planned to make more of this news content, in addition to The Wall Street Journal, paid.
