CTIA: Let me show you where it’s app

OK BlackBerry fans, the day you've waited for is finally here. Research in Motion Ltd. President Mike Lazaridis today unveiled the BlackBerry App World, a one-stop, mobile shop for hundreds of applications for the BlackBerry smartphones.

I downloaded the application to my BlackBerry Bold while watching Lazaridis deliver his speech to the opening session of the CTIA Wireless conference at the Las Vegas Convention Center. By the time the auditorium emptied, the widget was on the home screen of my BlackBerry and I was browsing the many applications — or apps — available in the following categories:

Entertainment: 14
Games: 166
Maps and navigation: 9
Music and video: 10
News and weather: 17
Personal finance and banking: 11
Personal health and wellness: 11
Productivity and utilities: 99
Professional and business: 15
Reference and e-books: 65
Social Networking and sharing: 11
Sports and recreation: 36
Travel: 24

I'll be downloading and testing many new apps in the days and weeks ahead, and invite you to do the same.

Let me know here, or on Twitter (@algibes) what your favorites are.

Lazaridis also announced a partnership between BlackBerry and the rock band U2. Details are still pending, but Bono and The Edge joined the speech by recorded message. Look also for Ticketmaster and BlackBerry partnership details soon.
