About 300 rally in Las Vegas for immigration reform

Mirroring lower than anticipated turnout at May Day events nationwide, about 300 people gathered this afternoon at Commercial Center to rally for changes in U.S. immigration policies.

Organizers said swine flu fears, not lack of interest, kept people away.

“People are scared,” said 20-year-old Jasmine Rubacalva, a College of Southern Nevada student and one of the rally’s organizers. “But we are still going to get our message out there.”

The strip-mall rally on Sahara Avenue near Maryland Parkway was organized to promote immigration reform that includes pathways to legalization for millions of undocumented immigrants.

Organizers hoped the rally would grow before a scheduled 5 p.m. march to Lloyd George U.S. Courthouse downtown.
