IN BRIEF

CASINO CAGE TARGETED

Man sought in robbery at MGM Grand

Las Vegas police are looking for a man who robbed the casino cage at the MGM Grand at gunpoint before fleeing on a motorcycle Friday morning.

Police said the man stole an undetermined amount of money about 4:45 a.m. and ran out on foot. He jumped on a motorcycle and took off in an unknown direction.

Police said the man was in his mid-30s, wearing a black jacket and dark pants and was not wearing a helmet when he fled on the bike.

Anybody with information on the suspect is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 385-5555.

CHARGES FILED

School worker accused in 'sexting' case fired

The middle school guidance counselor accused of "sexting," or sending inappropriate text messages, to a 13-year-old female student is no longer employed with the Clark County School District, officials said Friday.

Las Vegas police charged Franz C. Fajardo, 39, on April 11 with using his cell phone to send lewd messages to a minor and using technology to lure a minor.

Fajardo was an employee at Saville Middle School at Torrey Pines and Grand Teton drives in northeastern Las Vegas. He began working for the school district in 2003.

He was placed on administrative leave before he was fired sometime this week, district officials said.

SNAKE EUTHANIZED

Parents get probation in son's python attack

The couple accused of child abuse after their 3-year-old son was bitten and squeezed by an 18-foot python were given probation Friday in District Court.

District Judge David Barker sentenced Melissa Melendrez, 25, and Anthony Melendrez, 26, to nine months in the county jail but suspended the sentences.

The couple had earlier agreed to enter Alford pleas to one count each of gross misdemeanor child abuse charges. An Alford plea means the defendant doesn't admit guilt but concedes there is enough evidence for a conviction.

Authorities said the parents were caring for a python named "Eve" at their apartment on Flamingo Road near Fort Apache Road.

On Jan. 20, it got out of its cage and attacked the couple's son before Melissa Melendrez stabbed the python several times with a kitchen knife.

The snake later was euthanized.

TWO KILLED

Wreckage found from motorized glider

A Pave Hawk rescue helicopter crew from Nellis Air Force Base found the wreckage Friday of a motorized glider with the bodies of the pilot and a passenger from Colorado who went missing last week near Mammoth Lakes, Calif., after taking off from Tonopah for Modesto, Calif.

A spokesman for the Civil Air Patrol in California, 1st Lt. Matthew Scherzi, said the wreckage was found about 10 miles north of Mammoth Lakes in mountainous terrain.

Authorities had not released the victim's names but media outlets in Colorado have reported that Alan Melendy, 66, and Beth Hayden, 63, of Canon City, Colo., had departed Fremont County Airport last week for an air show in Modesto and failed to arrive on schedule April 24.

More than 200 Civil Air Patrol members from Nevada and California flew some 150 missions in the search effort before four helicopters and 24 airmen from the 58th and 66th Rescue Squadrons at Nellis and helicopters from the California National Guard joined in the search.
