Las Vegas Valley hits record-high 102 degrees

Triple-digit temperatures scorched the Las Vegas Valley today with a high of 102 degrees, marking the first 100-degree day of the year, according to the National Weather Service.

The temperature tied for the hottest May 17 on local record, matching the temperature set in 1970, said Katie LaBelle, a National Weather Service meteorologist. LaBelle said that, on average, it reaches 100 degrees or warmer in the valley around May 25.

LaBelle said Monday’s high should reach 101. Cooler temperatures in the low- to mid-90s are expected for the rest of the week. There is a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon, LaBelle said.
