Singer Estefan buying small share of Dolphins

The Dolphins are merging with Miami Sound Machine and Margaritaville.

Grammy-winning singer Gloria Estefan and her husband, producer Emilio Estefan, are buying a "very small" ownership stake in the NFL team, a person familiar with the deal said Monday. The person requested anonymity because the deal won't be announced until Thursday by owner Stephen Ross.

Ross began a partnership in May with Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville enterprise, which includes Land Shark Lager.

Buffett has yet to accept Ross' invitation to become a minority owner, but the Dolphins' stadium has been renamed Land Shark Stadium for this season. Buffett wrote a song for the team and will be featured at tailgate parties, Ross has said.

Also: Veteran defensive tackle La'Roi Glover is retiring after 13 NFL seasons.

Glover, who turns 35 on July 4, spent the past three seasons with the St. Louis Rams. He was not re-signed after the 2008 season, when he had 30 tackles.

Reinsdorf preparing bid to buy Coyotes

Chicago Bulls and White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf has promised to make an offer by Friday to buy the bankrupt Phoenix Coyotes and keep the team in Arizona.

Reinsdorf's attorney, Alan Klein, said his client is in the midst of conversations with the city of Glendale on a new lease agreement that would be part of the proposal.

Klein made the comment from Chicago via conference call in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Phoenix, where Judge Redfield T. Baum adopted a sale schedule that gives the NHL the first shot at finding a buyer who will keep the team in Arizona.

The judge set Friday as a deadline for potential buyers who would keep the team in Arizona to submit purchase applications to the NHL.

Also: Chris Chelios won't be with the Detroit Red Wings next season.

Wings general manager Ken Holland told The Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press he met with the 47-year-old, and Chelios won't be offered another contract.

Holland told the News it was "kind of understood last summer" when Chelios signed a one-year deal that it would be his last.

Holland said Chelios wants to play another season, and he thinks the veteran player still can be effective.
