Gibbons podcast praises Buckley, tea parties
In his latest video message, Gov. Jim Gibbons repeats his praise for Assembly Speaker Barbara Buckley for coming out against a corporate income tax.
"This is a major victory for those of us, like me, who think new taxes or higher taxes will kill jobs and destroy any chance we have of a speedy economic recovery," says Gibbons, who is filmed sitting at his desk in a gray suit jacket.
In saying she wouldn't support such a tax, Buckley, D-Las Vegas, said she didn't think there was support for it. "Well, I'm glad Speaker Buckley checked with those who would have to pay the higher taxes before she and her cohorts in the Legislature ordered those higher taxes," Gibbons says in the message. "I hope Speaker Buckley and the other liberal leaders in the Legislature who can't wait to raise your taxes will take a similar approach to the other new taxes they are planning."
Gibbons repeats his vow "not to raise your taxes," a vow most observers believe he has broken in proposing and allowing to become law the room tax hike he later tried to distance himself from. "I will veto a budget if it contains tax hikes," he says. "If the Legislature overrides my veto, so be it, but they will have to live with the higher unemployment, increased foreclosures and failed businesses they will create."
Gibbons then thanks "all the great Americans in Nevada who showed up for the tea parties around the state." He encourages his supporters to "send a tea bag to your representatives in the state Assembly and state Senate. ... They'll get the message."
