Resident praises The Cottages

A one-story cottage developed during the design stage has proven one of the biggest factors for success at the Cottages of Green Valley, a memory care and assisted living community in Henderson.

The Cottages opened in July 2002 with a capacity of housing 103 residents.

Residents such as Mary Cornell have chosen the community due to many factors including the one-story cottage design.

"When I first started to look, most of the assisted living and memory care facilities were impersonal," she said. "I was also pleasantly surprised to find the unique concept of cottages which made me feel much more at home and the concept is not so institutional."

According to Cornell, another benefit of the Cottages was the fact that family style meals are served in the cottages so residents have the pleasure of sitting with their cottage family.

"This is not anything like a cafeteria," Cornell said.

Each cottage, which usually has 12 residents, has a living room, family room and dining rooms producing a family like environment.

According to Cornell, "The whole community is gated and feels home-like with covered front porches on each cottage. A rose garden with beautifully landscaped courtyards and flower, fruit trees and walking paths are right outside my door. I came from a wonderful traditional home and this is just like home to me, only better. The people are friendly, the environment is warm and the meals are very good."

"The cottage concept allows us to have the highest caregiver-to-resident ratio in the Las Vegas Valley," said administrator of The Cottages at Green Valley Trudy Andrews.

Visitation is also a key to the popularity of the Cottages considering that the community welcomes participation by family and friends who are invited to enjoy the special amenities.

With a full-time activity director and assistant, activities and outings are presented often at Rose Hall and include live entertainment, religious services, activities and crafts along with holiday parties.
