Cry-baby Democrats don’t know real torture

To the editor:

I must complain about the vicious cartoon in Sunday's newspaper, drawn by Tom Toles of The Washington Post, showing Dick Cheney as "Master Torturer."

Of all the Americans captured by al-Qaida, how many have survived? Nobody. Not a single one.

When these savages capture Americans, that pathetic script of paper called the Geneva Conventions does not apply. All have been tortured in most hideous fashion, then "abused," and all have been found beheaded, such as journalist Daniel Pearl.

Not one Guantanamo Bay detainee has been beheaded.

The so-called "torture" that the cry-baby Democrats are screeching about is no worse than hazing experienced at some fraternities.

Rational being

To the editor:

Patrick Buchanan wrote on Sunday that President Obama's civility to foreign leaders critical of the United States proves that he doesn't understand or connect with most Americans. Presumably, most "patriotic" Americans would not allow criticism of our family by outsiders.

Even assuming that Mr. Buchanan is correct in his assumption about most Americans, don't we want a president who is better than us at dealing with foreign leaders? Don't we want someone who meets the world as a rational being, rather than someone who has an emotional and knee-jerk reaction?

Target practice

To the editor:

I have just returned from Canada. While there, I was privileged to hear a lecture by Bernard-Henri Levy, a French journalist and professed man of the left. The substance of his remarks were virtually identical to what Review-Journal Publisher Sherman Frederick had to say in his Sunday column about Judge Jay Bybee and Pol Pot. And both gentlemen echo what the noted historian Paul Johnson has said about secular millenarism.

The left has become defined by, and often dominated by, those who seek a utopian world by persecuting and eliminating all those who do not fit an ever-changing image of perfection. A leading characteristic of this malignancy is the criminalizing of differing opinions by whatever means come to hand. And the consequences be damned.

Three great minds have illuminated the target. It is up to the rest of us to figure out how to enfilade it.
