Regional schools’ leader leaving

Richard Carranza, the northwest region superintendent for the Clark County School District, has been hired as the new deputy superintendent for the San Francisco Unified School District.

Carranza will begin his job no later than Aug. 1, according to the San Francisco school officials.

Carranza will be joining San Francisco Superintendent Carlos Garcia, who was the superintendent of the Clark County School District until 2007.

He currently oversees 60 schools and 58,000 students for Clark County.

His accomplishments include an increase in the number of high schools and middle schools making adequate yearly progress under No Child Left Behind, and double-digit reductions in the percentages of special education and limited English proficient students performing below proficiency levels in English and math.

He is leaving Clark County just as the school system is consolidating its regional district system, reducing it from five to four regions.

Carranza is also a former principal of Eldorado High School.
