Reno police won’t give up raises as layoffs loom for city workers

RENO -- Reno officials say they may have to lay off some city employees after police officers voted overwhelmingly not to give up cost-of-living raises.

Friday's announcement of the vote by 294 members of the Reno Police Protective Association came just two days after the announcement that the firefighters union had agreed to give up 2.1 percent raises due in July and January to avoid layoffs. Mayor Bob Cashell says the city plans to keep talking with the police union to avert layoffs.

The city on Monday notified 89 workers that they might be laid off during the fiscal year that starts July 1. Officials pledged not to lay off any workers who surrendered pay raises. Two unions representing 62 sergeants and lieutenants are still voting.
