NLV casino to get payout for road project

Jerry's Nugget is scheduled to be approved tonight by the North Las Vegas City Council for a $611,740 payout because some of the casino's land has been claimed for the North 5th Street Corridor Project.

The payment will come from the Regional Transportation Commission, which plans to widen North 5th Street to 150 feet for seven miles from Owens Avenue to the Las Vegas Beltway to create a high-volume north-south corridor. The total project is expected to cost $125 million and be constructed in multiple phases.

The RTC is claiming nearly a half acre of the casino's land and using another 3,195 square feet for "temporary construction easement."

The city had the land appraised at $499,254 in June 2008. The casino's owners rejected that offer before another series of appraisals valued the land at $611,740.

The casino, which opened in 1964, sits on 10.5 acres in the city's redevelopment zone.
