Goodman grandstanding on Obama remark

To the editor:

If only Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman would put as much drama and effort into the really important things that need doing in our town instead of his latest tirade (Thursday Review-Journal).

This city's famous media campaign is all about the naughtiness of Las Vegas, not the seriousness of a business meeting here. We are not owed an apology from President Obama for his remark that bailed out banks shouldn't be partying in Las Vegas.

Anyone with common sense knew what he was referring to -- don't take holidays on taxpayer money.

I am well aware that companies do need to offer employees perks and, yes, we all need goals to strive for. Company incentives are great. That is not what the president was referring to. I am sure the mayor knows that.

A little help, Harry?

To the editor:

Why doesn't Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid jump out and defend Las Vegas after President Obama's criticism of the city as a business travel destination?

Good thing the president didn't say anything bad about Searchlight.

Same destination

To the editor:

In negotiating the stimulus bill, Republicans wanted to give immediate breaks to taxpayers, but Democrats were worried they would not spend the money and just put it in savings.

Don't most people keep their savings in banks? So I get taxed and the government can give the money to the banks, but if I put it in a bank, that's a bad thing?

Amazing irresponsibility

To the editor:

Not surprisingly, mother of 14 Nadya Suleman is begging for financial assistance, notwithstanding that the state of California will wring money from the taxpayers in perpetuity for birthing, maintaining and rearing the progeny of this brain-dead woman, the archetype of self-indulgent irresponsibility.

I would only hope, though seriously doubt, that the attending physician performed a tubal ligation at delivery to save us all, as well as Ms. Suleman's offspring, a repeat performance.

COMMENTARY:

Like most readers of the Review-Journal, I have closely followed the legislative debate over the past couple of years associated with the expansion of a film tax credit program in Nevada. Of course, as the president of UNLV, I have a vested interest in learning if and how it would directly aid our students, serve to lift up our campus community and contribute to the overall economic health and stability of our workforce.

COMMENTARY: On friendship

The importance of lasting bonds.
