Downtown Las Vegas casino project advances

Las Vegas City Council members today approved plans for a new downtown casino that would add a 1,000-room, 47-story hotel to Union Park.

They went to great pains to note the economic benefits of a new resort: new jobs, new tourists, new tax revenue.

Not one word was said, however, about the proposed new city hall, which is strongly linked to the new casino's ability to proceed.

Cleveland-based Forest City is the developer on both projects. In exchange for building a new city hall next to the Regional Justice Center, Forest City would receive 6.4 acres in the city-owned Union Park development on which the casino would be built.

The new city hall is being hotly challenged by the Culinary union, which turned in petitions to effectively put the project to a public vote later this year.

There will be a public hearing on the financing for a new city hall on Feb. 18.
