“Creative addressing” is throwing school enrollment off-balance in the Clark County School District, or at least the suspicion is strong enough that district staff is looking into it.

The problem, though, is “creative addressing” is one of those gray areas. It’s hard to prove without some prying into family life.

“Creative addressing” is when a family who wants to send their child to another public school will use the address of a relative or a friend who lives in the desired school’s attendance zone.

Who’s to say a child is not legitimately living with an uncle or grandma? Can you blame a parent for wanting to send their child to a better school?

I think “creative addressing” is an unforeseen consequence of the accountability movement in education. As schools get ranked and graded, it’s only natural that some schools will become more desirable than others. We do live in a consumer culture after all.
