TWO-YEAR TERM

Democrats pick Lieberman chairman

Sam Lieberman won election to a two-year term as chairman of the Nevada Democratic Party at Saturday's meeting of the party's Central Committee.

The vote was 180 for Lieberman and 138 for challenger Steve Fernlund.

Lieberman has served as chairman for more than a year. He was elected first vice chairman two years ago and moved into the top spot upon the departure of former Chairwoman Jill Derby.

Lieberman is a longtime party activist and donor who ran on a platform of continuing the party's success in the 2008 elections.

Fernlund, who heads the Red Rock Democratic Club, campaigned to give the party's Executive Board more oversight of financial matters.

In the only other contested race for party office, Jack Mallory was re-elected second vice chairman over Patrick Patin.

Daela Gibson ran unopposed for first vice chairwoman.

PIPELINE MAINTENANCE

Gas releases to make North Las Vegas noise

Southwest Gas is alerting the public that it will be performing routine natural gas releases at two sites in North Las Vegas on Monday and April 10.

The releases are necessary for pipeline maintenance projects under way around Centennial Parkway and Fifth Street and in the area of Alexander Road between Arcata Way and Bruce Street.

The odor of rotten eggs and noise similar to that of a jet engine will be heard in those areas between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. both days.

Officials recommend that pets in the area be leashed or kept inside during those hours because of the noise.

Anybody with concerns or questions about the releases can call Southwest Gas at 365-2040.
