Post-punk laptop rapper in town

He calls his tunes "post-punk laptop rap," which is a clunky term for a simple concept: nerdboy hip-hop backed by a rock band. But if MC Lars tends to get a little verbose, it's understandable -- the guy was an English-studies major at Stanford.

Since graduating in 2005, Lars has established himself as a tongue-in-cheek rhymer rapping in every-guy fashion about everything from emo peccadilloes to crappy roommates.

On his forthcoming disc, "This Gigantic Robot Kills," Lars collaborates with the likes of metal dudes Bloodsimple, Brett Anderson of The Donnas, members of pop punks Simple Plan and classical musician Walt Ribiero, among others.

Looks like Lars collaborator "Weird" Al Yankovic will have to start sharing his nickname soon. See MC Lars at 6 tonight at Jillian's, 450 Fremont St. Tickets are $10; call 759-0450.
