Principal won't face charge in incident

The city attorney's office has decided not to proceed with an assault charge filed by a former Churchill County High School softball coach against a Fernley school principal.

Tami Peel filed the charge with the Lyon County Sheriff's Department against Fernley Intermediate School Principal Ryan Cross over a Dec. 9 incident at the school.

School district attorney Don Lattin said the city attorney's office concluded there was insufficient evidence to bring charges against Cross.

Peel, 38, visited the school to see her daughter participate in a play, but the girl had already left by the time her mother arrived, he said. According to Lattin, Peel forcibly tried to enter a room where play participants kept personal belongings, and school employees stopped her from entering the room.

Peel has since been ordered not to set foot on any county school campus.

Peel awaits sentencing Jan. 27 on charges stemming from a Jan. 18 teen drinking party where a rape was alleged to have occurred.

Snow, traffic delays coming to the Sierra

Another storm is bringing more snow and traffic delays to the Sierra.

Chains are mandatory (except for four-wheel-drive vehicles) on two major highways linking the Sacramento, Calif., and Lake Tahoe areas: Interstate 80 over Donner Summit and U.S. Highway over Echo Summit.

Chains or snow tires are required on some other highways around Tahoe, including Highway 88 over Carson Pass.

Tahoe is expected to receive another 10 inches of snow at elevations above 7,000 feet.
