NFR Memorable Moment No. 7 …

Members of the rodeo community helped reporter Jeff Wolf select the 10 most memorable editions of the past 49 National Finals Rodeos.

The countdown to No. 1 continues.

No. 7
1992, Las Vegas
Purse: $2.59 million
Event attendance: 170,882

The 40th annual NFR was a record-setter, highlighted by saddle bronc rider Billy Etbauer, while roughstock cowboy Ty Murray, barrel racer Charmayne James and team ropers Jake Barnes and Clay O’Brien Cooper added to their lore.

Etbauer, who is riding in his 20th straight Finals this year, won five go-rounds, placed in four others and was the first bronc rider to complete nine of 10 rides. His earnings of $101,531 were the most ever in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association at the time.

Ty Murray also won his fourth consecutive all-around championship by qualifying for three events.

It also was a big year for Arizona’s Cody Custer, who won three bull riding go-rounds and tied for first in another en route to his world title.

In team roping, Arizonans Jake Barnes and Clay O’Brien Cooper won their sixth world championships. Barrel racer Charmayne James and Scamper won their ninth straight world title.
