Chemistry teacher from Fallon honored

FALLON -- A Churchill County high school chemistry teacher has been selected as Nevada Teacher of the Year.

School officials said Steve Johnson instills in his students a burning desire for learning.

School board member Ron Evans, who nominated Johnson for the honor, said his own daughters now work in the drug research industry and credit Johnson for their success. Both are college graduates with degrees in biochemistry.

Johnson was given a standing ovation by more than 1,000 students during a surprise ceremony at the school Friday.

Johnson will travel to Washington, D.C., to meet President Bush, and also will compete for national Teacher of the Year.
