Koelbaek leads UNLV to fourth-place finish

The UNLV women's golf team, paced by the solid play of Therese Koelbaek, set several program records Wednesday en route to a fourth-place finish hosting the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown at Boulder Creek Golf Club.

Koelbaek tied for second individually by shooting her second straight 6-under 66 for a 54-hole total of 16-under 200 -- which set program tournament records for total score and score in relation to par.

The Rebels shot a single-round record of 14-under 274 for a 19-under 845 total, which also was a team tournament mark for score and score in relation to par.

Pepperdine rolled to the team title at 41-under 823, setting an NCAA record, and was led by medalist Lisa McCloskey's NCAA-record total of 17-under 199.

Also: John Daly was taken into custody Sunday by Winston-Salem, N.C., police after he was found drunk outside an area Hooters restaurant.

Police said officers went to the restaurant on a medical call. When they arrived, Daly was being treated by emergency workers after losing consciousness.

While at the restaurant, police said Daly "appeared extremely intoxicated and uncooperative," refused repeatedly to be taken to the hospital and was asked to leave by several workers.

Seve Ballesteros is improving in Madrid, Spain, after last week's surgery on his cancerous brain tumor.

The La Paz hospital said the 51-year-old golfing great remains in intensive care and has also undergone a tracheotomy, a procedure it called common in cases like his.

Minor leaguer indicted for felonious assault

A minor league pitcher accused of throwing a ball that hit a fan in the forehead was indicted in Dayton, Ohio, on two counts of felonious assault.

Julio Castillo, 21, who was pitching for the Peoria Chiefs of the Midwest League, is accused of throwing into the stands during a July 24 game at Dayton that featured a 10-minute, benches-clearing brawl. The fan was treated for a concussion at a hospital.

Castillo was attempting to hit a Dayton player in the dugout, but instead struck the fan in the head, according to the Montgomery County prosecutor's office.

If convicted on both counts, Castillo could face up to 16 years in prison.

Also: New York Mets pitcher Ambiorix Burgos was released from jail in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, following a car crash that killed two women.

A judge ordered him to pay $57,000 and appear every two weeks before a magistrate until a court date is set.

The 24-year-old reliever is accused of abandoning the victims and fleeing after the Sept. 30 car crash, charges that can carry six months to two years in prison.

Criminal case dismissed against UNR's Fields

Brandon Fields, the top returning scorer on UNR's basketball team, has been cleared of any criminal wrongdoing in an alleged shoplifting incident at a sporting goods store, his lawyer said.

Fields, a junior guard, was one of three Wolf Pack players coach Mark Fox suspended indefinitely following their citations for petty larceny at a Scheels store in Sparks on Oct. 15.

Freshman guard London Giles pleaded guilty last week and was fined $350 plus court costs of $107. Freshman forward Ahyaro Phillips pleaded not guilty and is awaiting a trial date.

Also: Diego Maradona will become Argentina's soccer coach next week, leaving the team in the hands of a national icon whose achievements on the field have been undercut by a long history of erratic behavior and drug abuse.

Maradona is to replace Alfio Basile, who resigned following poor performances in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup.
