Convention’s third day to feature Reid speech

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Harry Reid will address Democrats at their national convention on Aug. 27, the third day of the gathering in Denver, a spokesman said Thursday.

There was never a question whether Reid, the Senate majority leader, would speak at the convention. But Democrats have been holding the program close to the vest and have been announcing details piecemeal.

Organizers have announced themes for each night of the convention. The theme for the speakers on that Wednesday night's program is "Securing America's Future." Reid will speak on "energy security," spokesman Jon Summers said.

Reid is expected to repeat a message he has delivered several times in Nevada, that the nation should wean itself from coal and reduce its use of other fossil fuels while turning to solar and other renewable sources to generate electricity.

The Nevadan is expected at the podium in the Pepsi Center in the early evening. C-SPAN plans to cover the convention gavel to gavel. Coverage plans vary for the networks and cable channels.

Also on Wednesday, the yet-to-be-announced vice presidential nominee is scheduled to speak to convention-goers and television audiences.

Rep. Shelley Berkley, D-Nev., has not been invited to give a speech in Denver, her spokesman said.

Whether any Nevadans besides Reid will be granted time to speak at the event was unknown Thursday.
