DINING: Happy National Daiquiri Day

Well, it seems like every day is National Something-or-Other Day, so why should July 19th -- and daiquiris -- be left out?

Yes, Saturday is National Daiquiri Day, according to the good folks at Bacardi rum, who seem to have a dog in this fight.
But I'll bet you don't know when and where the daiquiri was created. That would be in 1898 in the town of Daiquiri, Cuba, where, according to Bacardi, a mining engineer named Jennings Stockton Cox created it “to boost his men's morale during the hot summer months.”
So here's something to boost your morale during our hot summer months -- a recipe for a traditional hand-shaken daiquiri: Mix 3 parts rum (the folks at Bacardi, of course, recommend you use Bacardi Superior Rum), 1 part lemon or lime juice and 1/2 part sugar. Combine it all in a blender or shaker with ice, blend or shake and pour into a glass.
And lift a toast to ol' Jennings.
