IN BRIEF

EARLY MORNING INCIDENT

Officer shoots man at apartment complex

A Las Vegas police officer shot a man at an apartment complex early Saturday morning.

Lt. Lew Roberts said the two officers were responding to a call about 1:40 a.m. of shots fired at the Woodhaven Apartment Complex at 3650 Stober Boulevard, near Spring Mountain Road and Decatur Boulevard.

When the officers arrived they stopped two men standing near the iron fence surrounding the complex, he said.

During the stop, officers asked one of the men to raise his T-shirt to see whether he was armed and saw a handgun in the man's waistband.

Officers told the man to surrender, but he reached into his waistband and began removing the handgun "in an attempt to confront the officers," according to police.

One of the officers then fired multiple rounds, hitting the man. He was taken to University Medical Center where he underwent surgery. His condition was not available Saturday and his name was not released.

The names of the officers were not released, per the department's policy of withholding the names for 48 hours.

NORTHEAST LAS VEGAS

Gunfire at party sends girl, 16, to hospital

A 16-year-old girl was hospitalized after gunfire broke out at a late-night party in northeast Las Vegas.

Las Vegas police said the teen was in a car and trying to leave a party at the 3700 block of Full Moon Drive, near Craig Road and Interstate 15, about 11:45 p.m.

Spokesman Bill Cassell said he didn't have an update on the girl's condition or her name. He said the Metropolitan Police Department's gang unit was handling the case.

Neighbor Isidro Quiroz said he had called police about half an hour before the shooting complaining of minors drinking in the street. Police arrived, he said, but the party wasn't dispersed.

About 11:45 p.m., he heard three gunshots ring out.

"It was a high-caliber gun for sure," he said.

He then saw one man flee the scene, disappearing behind a house as another man chased after him and shot at him.

A truck across the street had a bullet hole in it.

Other people at the party drove the victim to a hospital, he said.

He and other neighbors said the neighborhood had been quiet until the people who live at the house where the party took place moved in.
