Girl who suffered heart attack dies
The 12-year-old California girl whose heart stopped while riding a local roller coaster died Tuesday, an employee with University Medical Center confirmed.
Catlynne Shaw had been in critical condition at UMC since she suffered a heart attack on a Circus Circus Adventuredome ride July 16. The UMC employee, who did not want to be named, said he did not know the exact cause of Catlynne's death. It's not known whether she had a history of heart ailments.
Catlynne was revived at Circus Circus by Ed Granil, a Clark County Fire Department engineer who was off duty while visiting the Adventuredome with his family. Granil and two other people pulled Catlynne from the Canyon Blaster and laid her on the ground after the roller coaster stopped and Granil saw Catlynne slumped over and unconscious.
After performing CPR on the girl, Granil helped hotel security use an automatic external defibrillator to revive her.
Catlynne was on the coaster with her cousin, who thought she had fallen asleep during the 105-second ride. Catlynne's family had been in Las Vegas to relieve the stress caused by the death of a family member, Granil said.
Yvette Monet, a spokeswoman for MGM Mirage, which owns Circus Circus, said the Canyon Blaster can reach speeds of 55 mph and includes a 45-degree drop.
