LV teens to compete in Science Bowl

WASHINGTON -- Five young scientists from The Meadows High School in Las Vegas will face off against 66 teams from 42 states this weekend during the U.S. Department of Energy's National Science Bowl Championship.

Juniors Tyler Fitzgerald, Matthew Shackley, Vishnu Halthore, Jimmy Zhou and senior Kevin Kowalski arrived in Washington on Thursday for the competition that ends Tuesday.

After touring the city and national museums on Thursday and Friday, the students will battle other teams today in hands-on experiments and challenges.

On Sunday, the students will compete in a head-to-head "Jeopardy!" type quiz. The students will be questioned on math, Earth science, physics, astronomy, biology and chemistry.

The initial rounds will determine semifinalist teams that will continue in the competition on Monday.

The top three teams will get to choose as their prize a scientific field trip to either the Thomas Jefferson Lab National Accelerator Facility in Virginia, the International Youth Science Forum in England or a nuclear science-based visit in France.

The Meadows team defeated 31 schools from four states in the Feb. 9 regional championships in Las Vegas, winning $5,000 for the school's science and math departments and an all-expenses-paid trip to the national competition.
