Rebel baseball takes beating from BYU

The UNLV baseball team gave up six runs in the sixth inning and eight in the seventh, losing to Brigham Young 21-9 on Saturday at Wilson Stadium.
The Rebels (13-15, 5-4 Mountain West Conference) led 6-2 after four innings, with Braden Walker hitting a two-run homer and Xavier Scruggs driving in three runs on two singles.
But the Cougars' firepower the rest of the way overwhelmed UNLV, as BYU finished with 24 hits, including six home runs.
• UNLV MEN'S TENNIS -- At Irvine, Calif., the Rebels beat UC Irvine 5-2 to cap their nonconference schedule.
UNLV (9-9) took two of three matches for the doubles point, then won four of six singles matches. Elliot Wronski topped Alex Sundling 7-5, 6-3 at No. 1 singles.
• UNLV WOMEN'S TENNIS -- The Rebels shut out New Mexico 7-0 at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
UNLV (10-8, 2-2 Mountain West Conference) took two of three doubles matches, then won all six singles matches. Elena Gantcheva, ranked 35th, rallied to beat Ola Abou-Zekry 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.
• UNLV SOFTBALL -- At San Diego, the Rebels lost to San Diego State 4-0 in the Mountain West Conference opener for both teams.
UNLV (20-21-1) was shut down by the Aztecs' Christina Ross, who allowed five hits and two walks but stranded six baserunners.
• CSN BASEBALL -- At Carson City, the College of Southern Nevada split with Western Nevada, losing the opener 2-0 and winning 3-2 in the second game.
The Coyotes are 26-19 overall, 15-9 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference.
• CSN SOFTBALL -- At Twin Falls, Idaho, the Coyotes (22-16, 17-11 Scenic West) split with College of Southern Idaho, taking a 7-6 win after a 7-1 loss.
