IN BRIEF
SUSPENDED SENTENCE
Man accused of killing baby avoids prison
A man accused of involuntary manslaughter in the death of his girlfriend's infant daughter will avoid prison.
District Judge Stewart Bell on Monday gave Anthony Naranjo a suspended sentence of 19 to 48 months. He also gave Naranjo five years' probation.
Authorities accused Naranjo, who is in his early 20s, of killing Mariah Martinez, the 9-month-old daughter of Eugenia Avelar. Henderson police said Mariah was injured on Feb. 6, 2006, and placed on life-support. She was taken off the next day.
Mariah's grandmother later told investigators that Naranjo said that he hadn't meant for "that to happen," according to a police report.
Henderson police arrested Naranjo in December. In March, Naranjo entered an Alford plea to involuntary manslaughter.
An Alford plea means the defendant isn't admitting guilt but recognizes that prosecutors have enough evidence to secure a conviction.
In exchange for the plea, prosecutors dropped first-degree murder charges.
CRIME SPREE
Two sentenced to 12 to 30 years each
Two men accused of committing a series of street robberies in 2006 that led to three deaths were sentenced Monday to spend 12 to 30 years each behind bars.
District Judge Sally Loehrer sentenced Brandon Bland, 22, and Carlton Fowler, 20, for their roles in a crime spree that left Saul Nunez Saustegui, 29, Antonio Perez Martinez, 42 and Raphael Alfred, 24, dead.
Bland earlier pleaded guilty to two counts of robbery with a deadly weapon. Fowler pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit robbery and one count of robbery with a deadly weapon.
In exchange for their pleas, the Clark County district attorney's office dropped murder charges against them.
The man accused of carrying out the murders, 28-year-old Eugene Nunnery, was given the death penalty after he was convicted in March of killing Saustegui execution-style during a robbery.
Nunnery faces two more murder trials as well as robbery and burglary trials in connection with the crime spree.
A fourth defendant, George Bass, 23, pleaded guilty to two counts of robbery with a deadly weapon and is scheduled to be sentenced on June 2.
Las Vegas police arrested the men in September 2006.
ACCUSED OF CUTTING OFF HANDS
Man, 29, indicted in slaying of ex-wife, 37
The man accused of killing his ex-wife, cutting off her hands and lighting her on fire was indicted for murder last week by a Clark County Grand Jury.
Andre King, 29, was indicted on multiple charges, including murder and robbery. Authorities accuse King of killing 37-year-old Sabrina King, a mother of two, on April 10 and burning her body to cover up the crime.
Three days before she was killed, Sabrina King filed a request to have a restraining order against King extended. She accused King of domestic violence, authorities said.
