Obama speaks in Las Vegas

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama appeared at the Springs Preserve in Las Vegas this morning to give a speech about energy policy.

After touring solar facilities and meeting with a local family to talk about economic concerns, Obama spoke to a small group of energy workers and took questions.

Obama said he would increase government support for renewable energy projects that would help the environment while creating jobs. He proposed sending a second round of economic stimulus checks to families to defray rising gasoline costs.

Obama criticized Republican presidential candidate John McCain's proposals, saying drilling off the American coast for more oil would not have any immediate effect on high gasoline prices. "I wish we could wave a magic wand and make gas prices go down, but we can't," he said.
