Aliante Library provides residents education, leisure

The Aliante Library is a source of educational and leisure opportunities for residents living in the Aliante master-planned community in North Las Vegas and the surrounding area, according to Jean Anderson, branch manager.

Part of the North Las Vegas Library District, the library is adjacent to Aliante's 20-acre Nature Discovery Park and offers such programs and services as story times, cultural and civic programs, public computers with Internet access, current movie videos, an ever-expanding Spanish collection and specialized books and materials on diverse topics.

North Valley Enterprises LLC, the developer of Aliante, donated the 3-acre parcel for the Aliante Library and contributed an additional $20,000 for educational materials and programs when the facility opened in May 2006. The 15,900-square-foot, one-story building houses reference, circulation, young adult and children's sections and an outside patio for story times.

Other features include a special programs room, multi-purpose room, meeting rooms, a kitchen, circulation and reference desks; book-processing areas and staff offices.

The library is sponsoring its Summer Reading Club through Aug. 7, a free program that provides reading incentive prizes for pre-readers through teens. Today, June 14 at 1:30 p.m., the library will present a special Mad Science assembly program, "Up, & Away." This free 45-minute interactive program presents educational science activities featuring hot air balloons, floating beach balls, sneezing dinosaur characters.

On June 21 at 11 a.m., the Aliante Library will present a free performance featuring, "The Magical World of Mac King."

The Aliante Book Club meets the fourth Monday of each month at 7 p.m. At the June 30 meeting the group will discuss the book, "Two Little Girls in Blue," by Mary Higgins Clark.

Each Monday afternoon at 4 p.m. North Las Vegas Fire Chief Al Gillespie comes to the Aliante Library to lead his weekly "Children's Reading Corner," which is designed to familiarize kids with some of the most popular children's books and authors of all time.

On June 30 at 6 p.m. Jodi Mobley, director of financial literacy and housing consumer credit for the Counseling Service of Southern Nevada, will continue her series of free personal finance classes with a presentation titled "Love and Money - A Positive Approach."

The Aliante Library is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and closed Sunday.
