Drive-by shooting kills one man, hurts another

One man was killed and another was injured early Sunday morning in a drive-by shooting at a Las Vegas park.

Metropolitan Police Department Lt. Lew Roberts said the men who were shot were recent high school graduates.

The motive for the shooting grew out of a fight that started at a party in the area of Lindell Road and Rainbow Boulevard, Roberts said. Six to eight shots were fired in the subsequent drive-by at Bob Baskin Park, on West Oakey Boulevard near Rancho Drive.

"It's nothing but stupidity," Roberts said. "It's just a bunch of kids doing things that they shouldn't be doing."

Police said they received numerous calls about 3 a.m. reporting shots fired at Baskin Park. When officers arrived, they discovered a dead 18-year-old man inside a car with a gunshot wound to his head. Police also found a man in the parking lot who was shot in the torso.

Police did not identify the victims. Roberts said the injured man was taken to University Medical Center and is not expected to survive.

Roberts said the two men had recently graduated from Spring Valley High School and Clark High School. Roberts did not know which victim had attended which high school. It's not known if the victims attended the party.

Police said the men who were shot were with acquaintances at the park. Witnesses told police a dark-colored compact car, possibly a Toyota Scion TC coupe, drove by and an occupant or occupants fired at people in the park.

Police said witnesses described the car as having custom wheels, a loud exhaust and a paint job that appeared to change colors when viewed at different angles.
