Police say couple knew intruder

Police believe that a couple knew the man they caught burglarizing their home Thursday night in the northwest valley, in what turned into a double homicide.

The couple, Sharon and Thomas Randolph, had hired the man, 38-year-old Michael James Miller, as a handyman, according to Las Vegas police.

Miller shot Sharon Randolph, 57, in the head, and then fought with Thomas Randolph, 53, who then shot and killed the intruder.

Police were called to the house at 8:45 p.m. and found the woman dead inside and Miller dead in the garage.

"She was a very, very nice lady," said 21-year-old Abigail Ray, who lives next door.

Ray said she heard a lot of commotion, including shouting, coming from the Randolph house Thursday night. Shortly thereafter, she said, she heard four quick gunshots from what she thought was a handgun.

Neighbor Claudia Simmons, 65, said Sharon Randolph was well-liked and friendly.

"I feel horrible," she said. "Our neighbor was killed."
