Monterey donates to Habitat for Humanity
The Las Vegas chapter of Habitat for Humanity receives donations from local businesses and individuals to fulfill its mission of building low-cost homes for families, and the developers of Monterey at the Las Vegas Country Club provided the latest offering for the nonprofit organization.
In January, Monterey, a condominium complex located within the gated Las Vegas Country Club east of the Strip, donated surplus building materials that were acquired for its studio, one- and two-bedroom units as well as two-story townhomes.
Among the truck-full of items delivered to the organization were granite slab countertops, clothes washers and dryers and under-mount kitchen sinks.
Kathy Dougherty, Habitat director of business operations, said the Monterey donation is an example of how builders and businesses have assisted the charity's local chapter.
"We are so grateful for all of the donations that the Las Vegas construction community gives us. Everybody wants to help Habitat for Humanity. If we cannot use the donations directly in the homes that we are building, we resell them at a store that we opened last April," she said, adding that the store is located at 1401 N. Decatur Blvd. and open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
"We really appreciate Monterey's donation. Monterey donated a whole truckload of very sellable items. The granite countertops, in particular, sold very quickly because it was very high-quality material. Because of donations like Monterey's, Habitat is able to raise cash to build even more houses."
In addition to material and monetary donations, Habitat for Humanity utilizes volunteers to construct the homes. The Las Vegas chapter has built more than 60 homes since beginning in 1991 and is currently building on Gregory Street, near the intersection of Losee Road and Lake Mead Boulevard in the northern valley. The homes are sold to families at no profit and financed with no-interest loans.
The developers of Monterey are happy to assist community organizations like Habitat for Humanity.
"For us at Monterey, donating the granite countertops and other building materials was an easy decision to make. Habitat for Humanity is a great organization that gives families an opportunity to enjoy the benefits of homeownership," said Marianne Pepe, vice president for sales.
"We are happy that their organization can benefit from building materials that we use in our condominium development at Las Vegas Country Club. This donation is one way that we try to give back to the community."
To visit Monterey, take Interstate 15 and exit Sahara Avenue east. Turn right on Paradise Road and left on Karen Avenue.
