HONOLULU

F-15 defect no cause of crash, officials say

A structural defect like the one that grounded all F-15s in November is not suspected in the crash last week of an F-15D off the coast of Hawaii.

Officials said the F-15D was intact before the crash 60 miles south of Oahu and had passed a safety inspection three weeks earlier.

The F-15s' grounding came after a model broke in two during a training flight over Missouri. An investigation concluded that a defective aluminum beam in the frame cracked.

Another investigation found that more than 150 of the military's F-15s had the flawed beams.

Officials said a team will gather in Hawaii this week to investigate Friday's crash. Training missions in Hawaii involving the jets have been put on hold.
