Top athletes: Boys, Mark Bunkley (So.); Greg Henderson (Sr.); Charles Phillips (Jr.); Kenny Walker (Sr.). Girls, Paige Holly (Sr.); Kayla Ryness (Jr.); Tiffany Carts (So.) Outlook: The Wolves have individual talent, but not quite enough depth. Bunkley and Henderson are two of the region's best.

 

CANYON SPRINGS

Coach: Nicole Branham

Top athletes: Boys, De'Mario Lay (Sr.); Jonathan Brooks (Sr.); DeMarshay Luckett (Jr.); Antonio Snow (Jr.). Girls, Amber Scott (Jr.); Nancy Zepeda (Sr.); Heather Hollinger (So.); Destanae Hoverton-Davis (So.) Outlook: The Pioneers are fielding a much deeper team, including pole vaulters for the first time, and are hoping improved numbers lead to a more successful season.

 

CHAPARRAL

Coach: Leon Soares

Top athletes: Boys, Chris Thiele (Jr.); Joeal Hotchkins (Jr.); Jose Olague (Sr.) Lista Duweynie-Hodges (Sr.); Jessica Calon (Jr.); Amanda Mayes (Sr.); Ivana Lee (Jr.); Destiny Hotchkins (Sr.) Outlook: Joeal Hotchkins won the 200-meter dash state championship, and Olague was state runner-up in the pole vault. Soares said he's especially excited by his team's relay teams and is impressed by his girls squad.

 

CORONADO

Coach: Nic Bolken

Top athletes: Boys, Trevor Varwig (Sr.); John Johnson (Sr.); Devone Riley (Jr.); Justin Denney (Sr.). Girls, Kiya Zarley (Sr.); Sandi Heholt-Leeds (Jr.); Emily Kashka (Jr.); Michaelanne Laurent (Jr.); Samantha Swanson (Sr.) Outlook: Bolken expects his team to break several school records and contend for the regional championship with the addition of a handful of multi-sport athletes. The girls side only lost two graduating seniors, with an impressive rising junior class.

 

DEL SOL

Coach: John Dixon

Top athletes: Boys, Kevin Laity (Sr.); Orlando Keiker (Jr.); Otto Hansell (Sr.); Evan Weinstock (So.). Girls, Amanda Staten (Jr.); Emily Tucker (So.); Gabi Bahnam (Sr.); Stevie Scott (So.) Outlook: Without huge numbers, the Dragons probably won't contend for a team title, but Dixon said he has some individual stars. Dixon is counting on an established group on the boys side, and said his girls' strength is in hurdles, throws and jumps.

 

DESERT PINES

Coach: Boys, Mel Washington. Girls, Becky Riddle

Top athletes: Boys, Kwame Banks (Sr.); Michael Ball (Sr.); Raymond Allen (Jr.); Marion Jackson (Sr.). Girls, Dana Hill (Sr.); Ashley Flemming (Sr.); Andrea Jefferson (Jr.); Deshanda Means (Sr.) Outlook: Banks and Ball return from the Jaguars' state-champion 400-meter relay team. The girls team is strong across the board, especially in relays and throws.

 

ELDORADO

Coach: Virgil Houston

Top athletes: Boys, Derrick Knight (Sr.); Edward Whiteside (Jr.). Girls, Osheanna Kincey (Sr.); Gianna Lafayette (Jr.) Outlook: Houston said his boys side is rebuilding, but he expects big things out of 2007 regional finalist Whiteside and state finalist Kincey.

 

FOOTHILL

Coach: Jim Yamka

Top athletes: Boys, Daryl Trotter (Sr.); Cameron Valker (Sr.); Brion Arvizu (So.); Mike Anderson (Jr.); David Witt (Jr.). Girls, Denicia Rush (Jr.); Leah Leedy (Jr.); Tylher Coleman (So.); Patrice Davis (Sr.); Caitlin Perry (Sr.) Outlook: Nearly 80 percent of the Falcon boys are underclassmen, but they should receive valuable senior leadership from Trotter and Valker. Rush is a strong contender for the girls 100-meter state championship after finishing second last season.

 

GREEN VALLEY

Coach: Blaine Thompson

Top athletes: Boys, Frank Satterfield (Sr.); Michael Crutcher (Sr.); Lance Mosley (Sr.); Rodrigo Medina (Jr.); Bryan Artmann (Jr.); Arion Molinaro (Jr.); Derrick Garrett (Jr.). Girls, Maria Savaa (Sr.); Sarah Mahoney (Sr.); Jordan Sala (Jr.) Outlook: The Gators return several high scorers, but Thompson is counting on added production from advancing underclassmen on the boys side.

 

LAS VEGAS

Coach: Elbert Gray

Top athletes: Boys, Aaron Atkins (Jr.); Robert Deguchi (Sr.); Anthony Robinson (Sr.); Ben Stout (Jr.). Girls, Sarisha Flowers (Sr.); Amber Kelly (Sr.); Amanda Cost (Sr.); Antoinette Garrett (So.); Laquana Branch (So.); Myeka Henderson (Sr.) Outlook: Gray said his boys team's strength lies in middle distance with Atkins and Deguchi, and in relays with Robinson. The girls return all four sprinters from the state champion 800-meter relay team.

 

LIBERTY

Coach: David Butler

Top athletes: Boys, Ian Jackson (Jr.); Anthony Norris (So.); Evan Moss (Jr.). Girls, Jade Washington (Fr.); Siraya Schultz (Sr.); Joslyn Evans (So.) Outlook: Butler said his team should be solid in a couple of years, but he is impressed at this point by his girls distance runners and boys hurdlers.

 

RANCHO

Coach: Jamarva Yates

Top athletes: Girls, Breshunna Collins (So.); Ra'yana Anderson (Jr.) Outlook: The Rams have a pair of stars in Collins and Anderson, who each reached the state finals in 2007.

 

SILVERADO

Coach: Boys, Mike Bashay. Girls, Dave Jones

Top athletes: Boys, Sean Whitesitt (Sr.); Ronnie Brakes (Sr.); Tim Howell (Sr.); Aaron Reed (Sr.); Mike Wadsworth (Jr.); Telvin McMillan (Sr.); Kolton Villa (Sr.). Girls, Brittany Spaulding (Jr.); Lisa Donnelly (Sr.); Jamie Cope (Jr.); Jackie Chiakulas (Jr.); Amanda Bingson (Sr.) Outlook: With the departure of four Division I athletes, Silverado has some lofty shoes to fill. But with excellence in throwing (Bingson won state in discus for the girls, Villa was a state finalist in discus for the boys) and huge numbers, the Skyhawks should again be elite.

 

VALLEY

Coach: Mark Salzman

Top athletes: Boys, Garic Wharton (So.); Shawn Williams (Sr.); Joshua Smith (Sr.); Rudy Frias (Jr.) Outlook: With an impressive crew of sprinters, the Vikings should contend for a regional title. Wharton is one of Nevada's top returning athletes, having placed second in state in the 100 and 200 last year.

 

 

SUNSET REGION

 

ARBOR VIEW

Coach: Boys, Sam Richardson. Girls, Tyrel Cooper

Top athletes: Boys, Corey Evans (Jr.); Cory Linscomb (Sr.); Jordan Miller (So.); Paul Quiroz (Sr.). Girls, Loren Jackson (So.); Maddie McCoy (Jr.); Jheri Gates (So.); Katie Carrell (Jr.) Outlook: A solid program top-to-bottom on both sides, the Aggies should compete for a regional championship. The girls team won the regional frosh/soph championship last season, and many athletes will compete for varsity spots.

 

BISHOP GORMAN

Coach: Don Giardina

Top athletes: Boys, Tyler Johnson (Sr.); Keola Antolin (Sr.); Nick Lewis (Sr.); Kamika Antolin (Jr.). Girls, Maddie Levine (Jr.); Kiara Belen (Sr.); Mariah Hobbs (Jr.); Anita Lee (So.); Sarah Toti (Fr.); Mary Maffey (Sr.) Outlook: The Gaels rededicated themselves to the track program with the hire of cross country coach Giardina. Giardina assembled a new coaching staff, including four-time Olympian John Powell to work with Johnson on discus and hammer throw.

 

BONANZA

Coach: Boys, Chad Robertus. Girls, Bruce Eubank

Top athletes: Boys, Jacob Thornell (Sr.); Aaron Simon (Jr.); Brandon Wanlass (Jr.); Christian Bulloch (Jr.) Outlook: Thornell and Bulloch return as state qualifiers, but the Bengals lack team depth.

 

CENTENNIAL

Coach: Boys, Rick Bush; Girls, William Miller

Top athletes: Girls, Ashley Lively (Jr.); Jazmine Lee (Sr.); Ashley Mosley (Jr.). Boys not reported.

Outlook: Miller expects his girls team to score in every event at the regional finals, with an especially solid distance unit.

 

CHEYENNE

Coach: Scott Thrasher.

Top athletes: Boys, Terrence Brison (Jr.); Marcus Sullivan (Jr.); Khyriece Campbell (Jr.); Girls, Brittney Washington (Sr.); Sharonte Marshall (Sr.); Brittany White (So.) Outlook: After a fifth-place finish at state last season, the boys squad returns several members, including key runners on the state-champion 800 and 1,600 relay teams. The Desert Shields girls squad finished third at state last season and has two stars in Washington and Marshall.

 

CIMARRON-MEMORIAL

Coach: Nikole Szczepanski

Top athletes: Boys, Julian Dupree (Sr.); David Ronan (Sr.); Terrance Jones (Sr.); Anthony Tutino (Jr.); Stephen Nixon (So.); Jordan Padgett (Jr.); Alex Davis (Sr.); Sacha Toussaiut (Sr.). Girls, Sha drena Simon (Sr.); Tiffany Hutton (Sr.); Ria Daniels (Sr.); Tasia Brown (Sr.); Ashlee Burks (Sr.); Erica Brinkley (Sr.). Outlook: Szczepanski inherited the team, introducing a new coaching philosophy to the successful program, with the boys team coming off a fourth-place finish at state. Nixon is one of the state's best athletes.

 

CLARK

Coach: Gina Reagh

Top Athletes: Boys, Quincy Hatcher (Jr.); Jake Naylor (So.); Troy Goudge (Jr.); Davey Ho (Sr.). Girls, Leah Ballard (Sr.); Kira Espinoza-Levy (So.); Aisha Williams (Sr.)

Outlook: Reagh considers her distance runners among the region's best and has high hopes about Naylor in the boys 3,200-meter run.

 

DURANGO

Coach: Jim Holben

Top athletes: Boys, Keshan Harris (Sr.); Donovan Lewis (Jr.); Romell Maxwell (Jr.); Alejandro Caballero (Sr.). Girls, Marticka Tillman (Sr.); Courtney McCann (Jr.) Kylie Sutherland (Sr.); Emilee Thomeson (Sr.); Tiarra Beville (Fr.) Outlook: The Trailblazers have a young, shallow team but are talented at the top. Holben said re-zoning really hurt the young squad.

 

PALO VERDE

Coach: Mike O'Dea

Top athletes: Boys, Courtney Robinson (So.); Torin Harris (Jr.); Mike Purdy (Sr.); David Rawlinson (Sr.); Chaz Thomas (Jr.). Girls, Ashley Wimmer (Sr.); Arlynda Banks (Sr.); Whitney Carter (Sr.); Shanika Fiker (Sr.); Brit Stanley (Sr.) Outlook: A very experienced team with several three-year letterwinners, the Panthers could take their team to the next level, aiming for a top-12 finish in state.

 

SHADOW RIDGE

Coach: Jeff Lewis

Top athletes: Boys, Robert Drye (Sr.); Preston Davis (Sr.); Chris Jones (Sr.); Theo Walker (Sr.); Tyler Bernard (Sr.). Girls, Lenette Battle (Sr.); Megan Brown (Sr.); Rebecca Brown (Jr.); Beth Perrin (So.); Tia Brass (Fr.) Outlook: Lewis said he expects his senior-dominated team to be competitive in most events, with upperclassmen providing leadership for a developing group of underclassmen.

 

SIERRA VISTA

Coach: Michael Hall

Top athletes: Boys, Mitch Paul (Sr.); Akiel Sharp (Sr.). Girls, Jessica Mojica (Sr.); Brea Foster (Sr.) Outlook: The Lions will rely on valuable senior experience.

 

SPRING VALLEY

Coach: Doug Clarke

Top athletes: Boys, Jordan Rincon (Sr.); Bryan Scott (Sr.); Tracy Lide (Sr.). Girls, Kourtney Moody (Sr.) Lilian Chevalier (Sr.); Justine Sullivan (Sr.); Dannielle Sullivan (Sr.) Outlook: The Grizzlies return several individual standouts but are looking for more depth. Rincon is a two-time state champion in the 400, and Scott owns many of the team's distance records.

 

WESTERN

Coach: Tony Whitney

Top athletes: Boys, Demarrion Horton (Sr.); Arron Harris (Jr.); Adrian Brown (Jr.). Girls, Unique Conner (Jr.); Iiesha Coleman (Sr.) Outlook: Conner is a returning state champion in the 400, and Coleman also advanced to the state meet.
