Frazier calls it a career at Basic

With new schools popping up around the valley almost every year, coaching changes are commonplace.

One exception to the constant changing of coaches has been Basic's football program. But after having the same coach the past 16 seasons, the Wolves are looking for a new leader.

Cliff Frazier, who posted a 53-98 record at Basic, said he is retiring from coaching and teaching.

Frazier has been at Basic for 24 years, first as an assistant, then 16 years as the school's head coach. No other Sunrise Region football coach has been at his current school more than five seasons.

"It's been a lot of fun," Frazier said. "Sometimes people look back at coaching based on wins and losses. I don't have an outstanding track record in that area, but the one thing I know is I was always fair with kids. Our No. 1 interest is having the kids come out mature and developing young, productive men.

"Hopefully that's been the end result."

Frazier began coaching at Clark in 1973 but said Basic became home.

"I just felt like once I landed there, it was like landing at home base," Frazier said. "It just has a feel of its own and really is a neat place to be."
