HORSE RACING
TODAY AT DEL MAR
By Richard Eng
Post Time 4 p.m.
Race 1 - 6 furlongs, Purse $28,000, Claiming $20,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Sugar Doll - Won in her Del Mar Polytrack debut, and that's a good thing; tons of back class to repeat the performance.
Carrie's a Jewel - Failed last time in her first start off the claim by Mitchell; suspect she'll show much better today.
Long Shot - Abbeys Runner
Race 2 - 6 furlongs, Purse $29,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, 3-year-olds and up
Kailee Rush - Baffert barn is going so bad right now, I pick this horse with an asterisk; his race two back would beat these.
Catch That Thief - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to claiming; talk about a cold combo, Headley and Solis.
Long Shot - Two Point Tony
Race 3 - 1 mile, Purse $34,000, Starter allowance $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Forest Miss - She has proven to love the Cushion track at Hollywood and the Polytrack here; tactical speed to sit a nice trip.
Bullysima - Finally put a big race together last time to get her picture taken; sometimes they like the special treatment too.
Long Shot - Toppers Moment
Race 4 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $39,000, Maiden claiming $80,000, 2-year-olds
Coronas At Delmar - Mullins is the hottest barn going, along with Miller; taking the biggest class drop from MSW to claiming.
Bond - Logical chalk got a perfect ride from Talamo last time and still lost; he's one of the weaker favorites on the card.
Long Shot - Verlander
Race 5 - 1 mile, Purse $68,000, Optional claiming $62,500, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Fun Logic - She is not big on winning but typically runs her race; like the rider switch to Smith to try and shake her up.
Debie Ginsburg - Stretching out around 2-turns for the first time; she figures to be forwardly placed exiting faster fractions.
Long Shot - Quiet Kim
Race 6 - 1 mile, Purse $26,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
Dart River - Baffert barn is going so bad, I'm happy to see Aguirre claimed from him; if he improves him a step, he will win.
Lonely Highway - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to claiming; should enjoy the switch from turf to Polytrack.
Long Shot - Old Thamesian
Race 7 - 1 1/16th miles (turf, rail at 14 feet), $125,000 California Dreamin' Handicap, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
Epic Power - Stole the win last time with a dawdling 25 2/5 first quarter; the pace will be faster, Nakatani is in fine form.
Lucky J. H. - Main question is if he's ready to fire his best off a 14-month hiatus; his back class suggests he'll be there.
Long Shot - Cigar Pal
Race 8 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
Fallen Leaf - FTS from the sizzling hot Miller barn; need not be much to handle these and gets meet leading rider Baze.
Set for Combat - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to claiming; Headley-Solis can't get arrested in Alcatraz.
Long Shot - Mike's Trippin
Best Bet - Dart River (race 6)
Del Mar Thursday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 15/1/$8.20; Long Shots, 7/2/$26.00; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Del Mar Totals - 222/53/$362.40; Long Shots, 112/17/$188.40; Best Bets, 14/6/$28.20
