Slaying brings life prison term

A 29-year-old man was sentenced to life in prison Tuesday in the beating and suffocation of another man.

District Judge Jackie Glass sentenced Manuel Carrascos to life in prison with the chance of parole in 20 years for the killing of Demetrio Hernandez.

Hernandez's body was found June 8, 2006, in the trunk of a Buick LeSabre in an apartment complex near Rochelle Avenue and Lindell Road.

Las Vegas police said Hernandez sold a bad batch of methamphetamine to Catrina Goodin, almost killing her.

In revenge, her husband, John Gillihan, along with Goodin, Carrascos and another man lured Hernandez to the Sky Motel on the 1700 block of Boulder Highway, where Gillihan beat him, police said.

Police said Carrascos yelled at Gillihan not to kill Hernandez during the incident.

Goodin eventually placed a plastic bag from a 99-cent store over Hernandez's head and suffocated him, police said.

Goodin and Gillihan are scheduled to be sentenced in January.
