Man, 78, dies after being struck in street by Jeep

A 78-year-old man died Wednesday night after he was struck by a Jeep while crossing Durango Drive with his wife to get to a park, Las Vegas police said.

Police said Victor Nieto was crossing Durango at Venetian Strada, near Alta Drive, about 6:20 p.m.

At the same time, a 2003 Jeep Wrangler driven by 48-year-old Mary Connolly was heading south on Durango.

Connolly struck Nieto while he was crossing the street, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said Connolly could face charges of misdemeanor manslaughter because Nieto was trying to cross at an intersection lacking a marked crosswalk but having an "implied crosswalk."

Police said that Connolly didn't appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol and that speed didn't appear to be a factor in the incident.

Detective Rich Tusko of the Metropolitan Police Department's fatal traffic unit said Nieto's wife had suggested to the victim before the collision that they cross farther up the street.
