Nonprofit seeks items for troops
The Marine Corps League will hold an event at noon Saturday to raise money for postage and to collect items to be mailed to troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan at Christmas.
League spokeswoman Cheryl Gardner said the event, Operation Christmas Stocking 2007, features entertainment, raffle drawings and special prices on food and beverages at the Leatherneck Club, 4360 Spring Mountain Road.
"There will be many celebrity impersonators, a country and western band, clowns for the kids, karaoke and continuous entertainment," she said.
Besides postage money, the nonprofit and the event's co-sponsor, Jones Media, are seeking such items as lip balm, hand warmers, hand-held video games, powdered hot chocolate, beef jerky, canned soups, personal hygiene items and other nonperishable items for Christmas stockings.
"They can bring them to the event or donate them later," Gardner said.
Everything must be mailed by Dec. 1.
