Relievers step up as 51s take down Beavers
Three 51s relief pitchers combined to hold the Portland Beavers to no runs on two hits in 5 1/3 innings Sunday as Las Vegas held on for a 6-3 victory in a Pacific Coast League game in Portland, Ore.
Jonathan Meloan (2-0) was credited with the win after limiting the Beavers (52-77) to one hit and one walk, with two strikeouts, in 2 1/3 innings. Chris Fussell then worked the seventh and eighth, and Eric Hull pitched the ninth for his 11th save of the season.
The 51s (59-70) struck early, as six of their first eight batters hit singles off Portland starter Jack Cassel (7-13). John Lindsey, Delwyn Young, Marshall McDougall and Choo Freeman each had an RBI single in the first inning to put Las Vegas up 4-0.
Young, who went 4-for-5, hit a seventh-inning double and scored on Chad Moeller's single. The Los Angeles Dodgers purchased Moeller, a catcher, from the Cincinnati Reds organization on Aug. 11.
Chin-Lung Hu hit his seventh home run of the season in the ninth for Las Vegas and finished 2-for-5. McDougall was 3-for-5 with a double.
Brady Clark had an RBI single for Portland in the first inning and was hit by a pitch in the fourth with the bases loaded. Yordany Ramirez went 3-for-5 with a fourth-inning RBI single for Portland.
The teams play again in Portland at 7:05 tonight.
