Suspect in Reno killing faces other charges

RENO -- A Reno man detained in Mexico in connection with the death of a University of Nevada, Reno faculty member also is wanted on a first-degree murder charge in a 14-year-old Canadian case.

Mohamed Kalam Kamalaudeen, also known as Rickey Barge, is accused of orchestrating the September 1993 robbery-related stabbing death of a 61-year-old Toronto man by a teenager, Toronto Police Services spokesman Mark Pugash said Monday.

Kamalaudeen, 50, is charged on a Washoe County warrant with the Aug. 18 stabbing death of Judy Calder, 64. Calder, a longtime associate professor for Human Development and Family Studies in the College of Health and Human Sciences, was Kamalaudeen's business associate. When Kamalaudeen moved to Reno several years ago from Guyana with his wife, Rose Ayube, he assumed the identity of Barge, a Dallas man.

Kamalaudeen was arrested Sept. 4 in Mexico on an immigration hold issued by Mexican officials. His immigration status in the United States is unknown, police said. Last week, a provisional warrant was issued against Kamalaudeen in Mexico to begin the process to bring him back to Reno.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Dan Greco said the extradition process could take months, even years. Lawyers representing the U.S. Office of International Affairs have been filing legal documents on behalf of the Washoe County district attorney, Greco said.

"Sometimes, persons incarcerated in Mexican jails who initially demand to be extradited change their minds," Greco told the Reno Gazette-Journal. "If at any point Mr. Kamalaudeen does that, he should be brought back to the United States immediately.

"Delays in these international cases are normal, but they can lead to good results."

Pugash said Toronto police accuse Kamalaudeen of arranging to have a 17-year-old boy murder Bernard Bimbi in an attack motivated by robbery. The boy stabbed Bimbi to death on Sept. 2, 1993, in an auto garage. He said the boy was convicted and sentenced, while Kamalaudeen remained a fugitive. He said he did not want to reveal Kamalaudeen's involvement with the boy or Bimbi.

Pugash said Toronto police are in frequent contact with police in Reno and Sparks and are deciding the best way to execute the warrant.
