TWO-VEHICLE WRECK

Henderson woman, age 33, killed in crash

A 33-year-old Henderson woman was killed in a two-vehicle wreck Friday evening at the intersection of Sandhill and Post roads, near Sunset and Pecos roads, Las Vegas police said.

The wreck happened about 5:35 p.m. when a 2001 Chevrolet Malibu driven westbound on Post by the Henderson woman, failed to stop at a stop sign. The Malibu was struck by a 2002 Suzuki Aerio heading northbound on Sandhill and driven by Robert Raines, 47, of Las Vegas. The Malibu then struck a light pole.

Both drivers were taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center. The Henderson woman died shortly after arrival, police said. Raines suffered moderate injuries.

The stop sign violation appears to be the cause of the wreck, police said, but it remains under investigation.

SEVERAL PEOPLE DISPLACED

Cat alerts resident to apartment fire

The meowing of a cat woke a Las Vegas resident and probably saved his life, according to authorities.

Las Vegas firefighters were called to the Allanza at the Lake Apartments on the corner of Durango and Starboard drives just after midnight Friday.

They arrived to find flames shooting out of the upstairs window of a two-story wood frame and stucco apartment building, said Fire Department spokesman Tim Szymanski. The fire was quickly brought under control.

A resident of the unit told fire investigators that he was asleep and was awoken by his cat meowing when he noticed the smoke, Szymanski said. The man investigated and found a fire in one of the building's apartments. He called 911 and fled the building.

The man suffered slight smoke inhalation but refused medical treatment, Szymanski said.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.

One unit was heavily damaged by the fire and a second unit had minor heat and smoke damage. Two other units had minor smoke and water damage.

The damage was estimated at $100,000. The cat survived.

Seven people were displaced because of the fire, Szymanski said.

The body was found by two people in the cove. The cause of the death was not immediately known.

There were few other details available Saturday.

HENDERSON SLAYING

22-year-old shot, killed outside house party

A 22-year-old Henderson man was shot and killed outside a house party near Wigwam Parkway and Pecos Road early Saturday, Henderson police said.

The shooting happened just after 1 a.m., when the man got into a fight with another man in front of 78 Megan Drive, spokesman Todd Rasmussen said.

Police arrived and found the man dead in the street.

The party was attended by a number people in their early 20s, Rasmussen said. A number of them fled after the shooting. There was a lot of drinking, Rasmussen said, judging by the beer cans and bottles at the scene.

Detectives were still investigating what started the fight that led to the shooting.

Police have been called to the home for several juvenile disturbances and a barking dog complaint, Rasmussen said.

Police had not made any arrests by late Saturday.

Anyone with information is asked to call Henderson police at 267-4755.
