24-year-old found shot to death identified

A Las Vegas man found shot to death outside the gate to the Souvenir Homes neighborhood early Sunday near Tropicana Avenue and Jones Boulevard has been identified as Abebe Molla Ayele, 24.

Police said Ayele worked Saturday night at McCarran International Airport and was returning to his home in the neighborhood on Westwind Road near Ali Baba Lane when he was gunned down. A neighbor found Ayele on the sidewalk about 1 a.m. and called police.

Las Vegas woman gets 30 months in prison

A Las Vegas woman was sentenced to 30 months in prison on Monday for fraud and filing false tax returns after she and her husband took personal information from family members and opened bank accounts and lines of credit in their name, authorities in Seattle said.

Kandi Rose Roberts, 38, also known as Kandi Kroon, and her then-husband Ernest Roberts, collected about $75,000 by defrauding family members and others, authorities said. They took personal information from relatives and others who used Roberts' tax preparation service to open bank and credit accounts and run up debt.

Ernest Roberts was sentenced earlier this month to 21 months in prison on similar charges.

The case was prosecuted in Washington state because Roberts and Ernest Roberts lived or live in the Northwest.

RED FLAG

Training exercises being held at Nellis

The sky above parts of Southern Nevada will be noisier through the end of the month as the Air Force continues training exercises that began Monday on the Nevada Test and Training Range north of Las Vegas.

Known as Red Flag, the exercises will involve nearly 100 aircraft, including the MQ-1 Predator and F-16 Fighting Falcon, departing and returning to Nellis Air Force Base. Red Flag is slated to end Nov. 2.

Informal poll shows support for Romney

An informal survey of 151 Nevada Republican insiders found Mitt Romney to be the candidate most would support as president.

The Massachusetts governor received 45 votes, or 30 percent, 14 votes more than second-place Fred Thompson, the former Tennessee senator, who was supported by 21 percent of those in attendance at Saturday's meeting of the Nevada Republican Party Central Committee.

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani received 18 percent of the vote, California Rep. Duncan Hunter got 16 percent and Texas Rep. Ron Paul took 13 percent.

Of the 151 who voted, 128 were committee members, the rest members' guests or campaign representatives.
