STORE SLAYING

Video poker player killed in shooting

A man was shot and killed while playing video poker early Sunday inside a convenience store near Boulevard Mall.

The victim was shot multiple times about 3:20 a.m. inside the 7-Eleven, 998 Sierra Vista Drive at Cambridge Street, Las Vegas police said.

Lt. Lew Roberts said police had no doubt that the victim was the intended target.

The gunman opened the door and fired at the man, who was sitting at one of the video poker machines that line the inside wall of the store near the front door, Roberts said. He said the shooting might have been gang-related.

IRAQ POLL

Guard deployments draw opposition

Most Nevadans oppose National Guard deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, a statewide poll published Sunday shows.

Of 600 likely voters surveyed statewide for the Reno Gazette-Journal, 67 percent opposed combat deployments to Iraq while 62 percent opposed such deployments to Afghanistan.

The poll conducted by Research 2000 from Aug. 14-16 has a 4 percent margin of error.

ANTI-WAR PROTEST

Demonstrators plan message for Bush

Scores of anti-war demonstrators are expected to greet President Bush when he arrives Tuesday in Reno to address the American Legion's national convention.

Activists, including veterans and military families, plan to wave "Support the Troops, End the War" placards outside the Reno-Sparks Convention Center, said Greg Richardson, Nevada field director for Americans Against Escalation in Iraq.

In his Reno speech, Bush plans to discuss the war in Iraq in the context of its Middle East implications.

SUSPECT GETS STUCK

Homeowner finds capture by chimney

A man was arrested on suspicion of burglary Saturday after he got stuck in a West Covina, Calif., chimney.

The suspect was found lodged about halfway down the chimney after the homeowner heard a noise early in the morning, police Sgt. Dario Aldecoa said.

He described the suspect as a 32-year-old man from La Puente. Fire crews were unable to pull him free and had to dismantle a "substantial" portion of the chimney, Aldecoa said.

HUGS FOR THE RECORD

College student thinks mark within her grasp

Kneeling for children and stretching to embrace taller people, a Utah college student thinks she has hugged her way into the record books.

Jordan Pearce, 18, said she hugged 765 people in less than an hour Saturday and plans to send the results to Guinness World Records.

"I was getting pretty glistening," Pearce said of the time in the hot sun.

The record is 612 hugs in an hour, the Daily Herald of Provo said.
