Mountain’s Edge hosts National Night Out event

More than 1,000 people attended the Mountain's Edge first National Night Out, which will become an annual event for the master plan, according to Deanna Stocker, manager of the southwestern community's information center operations at the Home Search Café.

Family type events included a bicycle-decorating contest and costume contest for dogs. The evening culminated with a movie, "Yours, Mine and Ours," in the park and under the stars.

National Night Out, now in its 24th year, is designed to draw neighbors out into the community and encourage them to get to know one another, according to Stocker.

The event involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from more than 10,000 communities from 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide.

Also in attendance at the event were members of Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, its K-9 Unit and the Clark County Park Police, who spoke to families about safety issues and provided kids with stickers and certificates for free drinks at 7-Eleven stores.

Metro's canine unit was on hand to perform a K-9 demonstration.

The 80-acre Exploration Park opened in March and is the first of six parks planned for the community.

Master planner Focus Property Group, along with the Mountain's Edge homeowners association, holds events at its parks and facilities throughout the year.

The community hosted a pancake breakfast to celebrate the Fourth of July. Hundreds of revelers enjoyed pancakes, pastries, juices and coffee, as well as activities including a water slide, kids' Ferris wheel, patriotic face painters and Uncle Sam balloon twister.

Additional activities have been planned for residents of Mountain's Edge, including a 5K race to benefit Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation Sept. 15 and the Heart Walk to benefit the American Heart Association Oct. 13. The community also has plans for a fall festival and an event surrounding the winter holiday season.

Residents also can attend quarterly water-smart landscaping seminars held at the Desert Demonstration Garden, which is located in the backyard of the Home Search Café. The next seminar is scheduled for Nov. 17.

Those wanting to learn more about events at Mountain's Edge, the parks and recreational amenities, and homes in the community through builders participating in the master-planned community, are invited to visit the development's Home Search Café, located at the community's entrance on Buffalo Drive and Blue Diamond Road, or visit mountainsedge.com.

The Café is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. For more information, call 898-5777.
