Gibbons traveling to Mexico
CARSON CITY -- Gov. Jim Gibbons will head south of the border next week to meet with Mexican President Felipe Calderon.
The purpose of the meeting is to discuss trade and tourism, border security and methamphetamine trafficking, all international issues that have strong impacts in Nevada.
The trip will begin Monday and end Wednesday. It will include stops in Mexico City and Guadalajara. Gibbons also will meet with ministers and other high-ranking officials.
The visit is one of three trips related to issues with Mexico that Gibbons is making this month.
On Thursday, he went to San Diego to receive briefings from Nevada National Guard troops who are assisting with enforcement along the U.S.-Mexican border. The troops are stationed at Camp Morena, Calif.
On Aug. 23, Gibbons is scheduled to meet with Arizona Gov. Jane Napolitano to discuss shared border security issues, including immigration, homeland security and drug trafficking.
Though Nevada does not share a border with Mexico, border security has a significant impact on the state, according to Gibbons' office. More than 90 percent of the methamphetamine confiscated in Nevada is smuggled in from Mexico.
