Search continues in slaying

Authorities are continuing to search a North Las Vegas neighborhood for the suspect who fatally shot a 15-year-old boy and wounded a 14-year-old boy and a 20-year-old woman.

The shooting occurred Monday about 6 p.m. at the corner of Englestad Street and Gilday Avenue, near Martin Luther King and Lake Mead boulevards.

The shooting left James Givens dead.

The two others wounded were treated at University Medical Center and released, North Las Vegas police said.

Residents said they heard at least 15 shots fired.

Bridget Earl, Givens' mother, said she received a call from James' father Monday night telling her the news.

"He said, 'They killed my boy,'" she said.

Earl said she and her son had been estranged for years but started reconnecting with each other about three years ago. James' father raised him, but Earl spoke with James daily on the phone and saw him at least once a week.

James, who was born in San Jose, Calif., moved to Las Vegas when he was 3 and at one point attended Booker Elementary school. He has one older brother and two sisters.

Earl didn't know why her son was killed but didn't believe James was in a gang.

"If he was in a gang, he did a good job of hiding it from me," she said.
